New Self-Care Handbook Helps Manage

SAN DIEGO, CA, May 2, 2005 --Sterling Heart, Inc. (www.sterlingheart.com), launched last month, said today it has sold out the first printing of HEART WIDE OPEN -- Self-Care for Caregivers, a new self-care handbook for caregivers, families and healthcare providers dealing with end-of-life and life-changing situations. Orders are already being taken for the second printing.

Written by Sterling Heart, Inc.'s co-founders and husband-wife team, Sandi Kimmel and Patrick Murphy, the book helps readers self-manage compassion fatigue with 21 practical and centering techniques that help people relax, recharge and rejuvenate body, mind and spirit.

Hospices and healthcare organizations ordering HEART WIDE OPEN include AseraCare, Orange, CA; Hospice of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI; Catholic Community Hospice, Kansas City, KS; Visiting Nurse Service, Bridgeport, CT; Kaiser-Permanente, Continuing Care Hospice, Granada Hills, CA; Vitas, Walnut Creek, CA; Willits Hospital/Phoenix Hospice, Willits, CA; Hospice of the Valleys, Sun City, CA; and Maryknoll Fathers & Brothers, Maryknoll, NY, among others.

Fifty million Americans identify themselves as caregivers -- from baby boomers assuming increased medical and lifestyle responsibilities for their parents to healthcare professionals and volunteers working in healthcare facilities and homecare programs. On a daily basis, caregivers must balance their family, personal and professional lives with patient-care responsibilities, often leading to “compassion fatigue.”

“This handbook from Sterling Heart provides helpful, loving support for caregivers,” said Reverend Linda Lloyd, ThM, Chaplain at Hospice of the Valleys in Sun City, CA. “Its quickly and easily integrated techniques give care providers a much-needed renewal resource to help deal with the emotionally demanding work.”

Reactions from other care professionals include Steve Bayer, Volunteer Director at Phelps Hospice in Sleepy Hollow, NY, who said, “HEART WIDE OPEN is great for staff, volunteers and families alike;” and Dr. Barbara Diamond, psychotherapist, who considers the handbook “a valuable resource to enhance well-being.”

Launched in April 2005, Sterling Heart, Inc. (www.sterlingheart.com) provides a new generation of self-care resources, including music, books, seminars and training, for caregivers, families and healthcare providers dealing with life-changing situations. The company is headquartered in Temecula, CA.
